Tucked into the lush jungle canopy, this spacious yet grounded hidden villa feels like a secret carved into nature. Built downward into the hillside, it blends seamlessly into the wild, offering rare peace, total privacy, and sweeping ocean views.

The entire retreat was so well-run operationally, it was such a treat to not have to think or make a decision all week. There was amazing food and the hosts were fabulous - the entire team made the experience so special. The surf coaching was the best - absolute expertise in the water (only 2 people to each coach) but also really fun amongst the whole crew. I hadn’t surfed for 2 years, and this was the best best re-entry to it.

I’ve been to many retreats around the world and can say this is the most well-organized with the best food. I was the only person attending who had never before surfed and can say I enjoyed every minute in the water with the amazing surf coaches. In terms of the horseback riding, it was truly one of the most special experiences I’ve had. While I’ve been riding in different places around the USA and the world, this was by far the best. We were able to gallop on the beach on many occasions with horses that are well-cared for and incredible local cowboys who are all so kind. Our last evening there, we rode horses along the beach and into the jungle for dinner, even crossing a river at one point. Our jungle ride quickly became even more ethereal than I could have imagined when the rain began falling. We made our way onto the beach to see the full moon peeking out behind the clouds. Heaven.

FAQs
Do I need to be familiar with horses?
You do not need to be an experienced rider or have a history in working with horses. All the horseback rides will be organized based on your riding level and experience.
What do the equine-assisted activities consist of?
Equine Facilitated Coaching is an experiential learning approach that partners individuals with horses for learning and development.
The approach uses various forms of groundwork and horseback exercises that unite horse and human in a collaborative co-learning process that reveals the way participants relate to themselves and others.
What surf level do i need to participate in the retreat?
None! Our retreat is designed for women of all surf levels, from beginners to advanced surfers. Our team of experienced surf coaches will tailor personalized lessons to meet your individual needs.
What if i've never surfed before?
No problem at all! Our retreat is perfect for beginners and so are these beaches. Our team of surf coaches will start with the basics, teaching you everything you need to know to catch your first wave safely and confidently.
Do i need to bring my own surfboard?
No need! We provide all the necessary surf equipment, including boards, leashes and wax. However, if you have your own gear and feel more comfortable using it, you're welcome to bring it along*.
*Take in consideration that you wont be able to take the domestic flight with boards over 7' so in that case you'll have to travel via land.
What is the typical age range of guests?
Our retreat welcomes women of all ages, starting from 18 and up. To give you an idea, about 80% of our guests are between 25 and 55 years old. We love witnessing the diversity and unique perspectives and experience that each guests brings to the group. We have created an inclusive environment that ensures that everyone feels valued and empowered, regardless of age.
Im traveling solo. Will i feel out of place?
Not at all! The majority of our guests come solo, and our retreats are carefully curated as supportive and inclusive experiences for everyone. You'll have plenty of opportunities to connect with other like-minded women and most likely build friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime.
How to get to the AWA Lodge?
This AWA venue is located in Playa Hermosa, on the south western coast of the Peninsula of Nicoya, about 20 minutes north from Playa Santa Teresa. Find below the detailed information on how to get to us from your preferred international airport:
SHUTTLE
We can coordinate transportation to the Villa from SJO or Liberia via land on public shuttle. You'll be collected from your preferred airport and driven directly to us. These shuttles operate regularly early in the mornings so fi your itinerary doesn't match this pick up time, we can also support you coordinating a private shuttle.
PLANE
There are currently two domestic airlines providing daily flights from San José and Liberia to our closest local airport: Cóbano. The flight is approximately 30 minutes and it costs something between $130-$150. We recommend Costa Rica Green Airways.
On arrival into CĂłbano, one of our taxi drivers will be waiting for you with a sign with your name. The ride to the AWA Eco-Lodge is only 30 minutes.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The above plane option won't work for those who are travelling with surfboards bigger than 7'0.
At what time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is at 3PM.
Check-out is at 10AM.
What is the local currency and where should i exchange money?
Most tourism businesses accept US dollars and cards. There are ATM's available in the area. You can also exchange your USD for colones (local currency) at most grocery stores.
If you are coming from a country outside of the US, we recommend exchanging your money outside of the airport as the airport charges the highest exchange fee.
Im nervous, should i do this?
We promise you’ll have an epic time. "It’s truly amazing and hard to put into words", our guests say...If you are feeling the call, just do it, let go of any expectations and let us host you during the time of your life!
